Meet: Dr. Kay Powell

Dr. Kay Powell grew up in Madison, WI and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2010 with a B.A. in Biology. From there, she worked as a cancer research laboratory technician for 2 years before moving to Memphis, TN. She graduated with honors from Southern College of Optometry (SCO), where she completed training that emphasized pediatric care, vision development, and brain injury rehabilitation. Before relocating to Arizona, she practiced optometry in Blytheville, AR, where she provided vision therapy, as well as pediatric and adult care.

While in optometry school, Dr. Powell was active in several clubs, including the College of Optometrists in Vision Development and the Sports Vision Club. She also served as the SCO volunteer coordinator for Remote Area Medical, an organization based in Knoxville, TN that provides medical, dental, and eye care to people who have limited access to those services.

Dr. Powell was selected as a member of the Gold Key Honorary Optometric Society in 2015. Membership is restricted to 10 percent of the SCO fourth-year class, and is awarded to students demonstrating outstanding leadership and service.

During her free time, Dr. Powell enjoys playing the piano, training and traveling with her Ultimate Frisbee team, and spending time with her husband, Chris, and dog, Z-Bo.
